Sakhalin–Hokkaidō Tunnel

The Sakhalin- Hokkaidō Tunnel ( or possibly the Sakhalin- Hokkaido Bridge ) is a proposed connection under the La Pérouse Strait between the Russian island of Sakhalin and the Japanese island of Hokkaidō. According to Russian estimates, the cost will be approximately $ 50 billion.

Tunnel project

The tunnel would connect about 40 to 45 km between Cape Crillon in Russia and Cape Soya in Japan.

The project would be an alternative to the Japan - Korea tunnel because you are far advanced in Russia during the planning and construction of many of the a necessary connections from Sakhalin to the mainland and because the tunnel is considerably shorter than the Japan - Korea tunnel between Japan and Korea would be.

Gauge

The railroad on Sakhalin has a gauge of 1067 mm ( Cape gauge ). It is envisaged this switch tracks of 1520 as part of the railway line Selichino Sakhalin to the Russian broad gauge. The network of Japanese railways has a track width of 1067 mm and the Shinkansen network, the standard gauge of 1435 mm. The rail networks are therefore not compatible. It is unclear what the gauge would be used for the proposed tunnel and the associated infrastructure, or whether a multi-rail track or Umspureinrichtung used.
