Saku Brewery

The company Saku ( estn Saku Õlletehase AS) is the oldest and largest brewery, and the most important beverage producer in Estonia. It is named after the place Saku ( German sack) in Tallinn ( Reval German ) named, in which it has its seat.

History

The history of the brewery dates back to the year 1820, when the Baltic German landowner Karl Friedrich Rehbinder in Saku a brewery and a distillery founded. 1849 the manor house and the brewery went into the ownership of the Baggo family. This modernized in 1876, the brewery and turned it into a professional operation. From the end of the 19th century Saku was one of the most famous breweries in Estonia. An upheaval experienced the company mainly to the completion of the railway link between Saku and Tallinn 1899. During the same year the brewery was converted into a public limited company.

With the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union, the brewery was nationalized as all companies of the Soviet occupation authorities. However, Saku remained one of the most popular beers in the Baltics. Especially in 1976 the facilities were expanded again.

Saku today

After regaining independence, the Estonian Saku brewery was privatized and revived as a joint venture. Since 1995 she has been a public company again. Saku Õlletehas is now the largest beverage producer in Estonia. Since the September 20, 2008 Saku is 100 % owned by Carlsberg Group.

In addition to beer Saku is also mineral water ( Vichy), Cider (brand name: Kiss) manufactures and long drinks.
