The active volcano Sakurajima (桜 岛Japanese, German " Cherry Island" ) is located in Kagoshima Prefecture on Kyushu in Japan. He belongs to the administrative area of the city of Kagoshima and was about 13,000 years ago as a volcanic island in the south of the Aira caldera, which was more around 9,000 years earlier and forms the northern part of Kagoshima Bay.

There are several small places and hot springs (Japanese Onsen) On its west side.

Volcanic activity

It is one of the most active volcanoes of Japan with continuous volcanic activity. The most violent eruption in historical times occurred in 1471-1476 and reached the level 5 on the Vulkanexplosivitätsindex. During the eruption of 1914 with the strength 4, the volcanic island joined at a point with the Ōsumi peninsula of the mainland.

On 13 March 2011, the volcano erupted again and flung ash and lava several kilometers into the air.

Another eruption occurred on 18 August 2013.

Tourism

The volcano is located directly opposite the center of Kagoshima. He can be reached throughout the day with a ferry.
