Sakyadhita International Association of Buddhist Women

Sakyadhita ( " Daughters of the Buddha" ) was founded in 1987 as the Network of Buddhist Women in Bodhgaya. Occasion was the " Conference on Buddhist Nuns ", for which the Dalai Lama had taken over the patronage. The initiative came from the German nun Ayya Khema Theravada, from the American Bhikshuni Karma Lekshe Tsomo, the Thai professor Chatsumarn Kabilsingh ( and later nun Dhammananda ) and the German Bhikshuni Jampa Tsedrön.

Since then, numerous international and regional Sakyadhita conferences took place:

The objectives of Sakyadhita are

  • To promote understanding between the Buddhist traditions, particularly through international conferences
  • Train women to support, and to encourage them than to be teachers working
  • To give Buddhist nuns and women who want to be nuns, guidance and help and to support them in their training
  • To support research and publish related to women
