Salamaua

Geographical location

Salamaua ( German outdated: Samoa port) is a small peninsula on the northern coast of New Guinea in Papua New Guinea, south of Lae. The island was in 1920 when gold was discovered by the prosperity of the population.

World War II

The peninsula, which was until then under Australian control, was evacuated by these troops on 22 January 1942. A little later, on March 8, 1942, Japanese troops landed during the conquests in New Guinea on Salamaua and erected there a base. Later, the peninsula of Australia was retaken, the last defenders surrendered on 12 September 1943. Nowadays you can find on the Salamaua still remnants of old positions and vehicles. After the peninsula, a U.S. aircraft carrier was named among other things, the USS Salamaua (CVE -96).

Larger cities

Salamaua has a harbor and was the starting point for prospectors. The place was almost completely destroyed in World War II. Tourism is the main income source in addition to fishing.
