Saleh Meki

Saleh Meki (* 1948 in Gulie region Maekel; † 2 October 2009 Gindae ) was an Eritrean politician.

Biography

Meki, a member of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front ( EPLF ) and later the People's Front for Democracy and Justice ( PFDJ ), went in 1972 in the U.S. and was for a time a representative of the PFDJ in San Francisco. There he worked as an anesthesiologist after studying medicine and also acquired U.S. citizenship. In 1991, he returned to his home country.

After the independence of Eritrea on 24 May 1993 he was appointed Minister of Marine Resources and Fisheries of President Isaias Afewerki first. Following a cabinet reshuffle in 1997, he served for twelve years as Health Minister and led as such by a number of reforms in the health sector.

Last President Afewerki called him in April of 2009 as Minister of Marine Resources. As such, it was incumbent on him, his successor as Minister of Health, Amna Nurhussein to incorporate as well as acting to direct the Ministry of Sport. In addition, he advised because of his experience with the U.S. Foreign Minister Osman Saleh Mohammed.

Meki died during his term in office of a heart attack and was buried on 6 October 2009 at the Martyrs Cemetery of Asmara.
