History

Salem was founded in 1806 by the pennsylvenischen potter John Straughhan ( Strawn ) and the New Jerseyer shoemaker Zadok Street. The city's name is derived from " Shalom " and " Solaam " and means "peace." Early settlers of the place were Quakers.
