Salem is a village in the Town of Salem in Washington County. It belongs to the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. At the 2000 census, the village had 964 inhabitants.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 7.6 km ², which is composed exclusively of the country.

The New York State Route 22 leads as Main Street through the town and crosses here the County Roads 30 and 153 The East Beaver Brook flows through the western part of the village.

The Village is located in the northern part of the Town, in whose territory it is located. Part of the management of the county was once home here, including the jail and the sheriff's office. The former Court House has been preserved as a landmark. It was built in 1869 according to plans by E. F. Cummings and was used until 2004 as a county jail. History

The village was founded in 1762 by settlers from New England and Scotland. At this time, the area belonged still to Albany County. They first carried two names, White Creek and New Perth, who wanted to put two different groups of settlers. Finally, the New York City government put the name.

Salem's Downtown was founded in 1975 as a historic district and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
