Salquenen with Pfynwald

Salquenen ( fr. Salquenen ) is a 1,300 inhabitants municipality in the district of Leuk in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland.

Geography

Salquenen situated on the linguistic border between Upper and Lower Valais. The natural language border is north of the Rhone, the small creek Raspille between Sierre and Salquenen. The place is known for its vineyards, its wines and the proximity to the nature reserve Pfynwald, which is the largest contiguous pine forest in the Alps.

History

Salquenen evolved from a farming village after the Second World War to today's modern wine village. About 200 hectares of vineyards and over 40 wineries dominate the present village image. The neighboring Pfynwald serves not only the algae Schern and other surrounding communities as a recreational area, but is also one of the best preserved natural and cultural landscapes of Switzerland. This is a nature reserve offers different animal and plant species, a variety of different and rare habitats for which it is nationally estimated.

The coat of arms consists of a white cross of St. John on a black background. In 1235 the Knights of St. John took up residence in the village and built a hostel for pilgrims and travelers. 1655 bought Kaspar von Stockalperschloss the Coming and belonging to her hospice on the Simplon Pass.
