Saline County (Arkansas)

The Saline County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Benton. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited. The Saline County is part of the metropolitan Little Rock.

Geography

The County is adjacent to the geographic center of Arkansas, and has an area of 1892 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

The Saline County was formed on November 2, 1835 from parts of Hempstead County and Pulaski County. It was named after the present in the environment at that time salt mines.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Saline County 83 529 people in 31,778 households and 24,500 families. The population density was 45 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 95.27 percent White, 2.20 percent African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 0.57 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.45 percent from other races groups; 1.00 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 1.30 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 31,778 households out of which 35.4 per cent of children or young people under the age of 18 who lived with them. 63.8 percent were married couples living together, 9.7 percent were single mothers, 22.9 percent were non-families. 19.6 percent of all households were single-person households and 7.5 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size is 2.94 people.

25.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 to 24, 30.2 percent between 25 and 44, 24.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.5 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 98.1 males to every 100 females age 18 and over, there were an average of 95.3 males.

The median income for a household was $ 42,569, and the median income for a family $ 48,717. Males have a median income of $ 32,052, women $ 23,294. The per capita income was $ 19,214. 5.0 percent of families and 7.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
