Saline County (Kansas)

Saline County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Salina.

Geography

The County is located just north-east of the geographic center of Kansas and has an area of 1868 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Ottawa County, Dickinson County, Marion County, McPherson County, Ellsworth County and Lincoln County.

History

Saline County was formed on 15 February 1860. It was named, as well as the district capital, according to the Saline River.

According to the census of 2000, there were 53 597 people in Saline County; it was counted 21,436 households, and 14,212 families. The population density was 29 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 89.17 percent White, 3.10 percent African American, 0.52 percent Native American, 1.70 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 3.33 percent from other races groups; 2.14 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.02% of the population were spanischerer or Latino of any race.

Of the 21,436 households out of which 32.1 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 52.9 percent were married couples living together, 9.7 percent were single mothers and 33.7 percent were non-families. 28.3 percent of all households were single-person households and 10.7 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size 2.98.

The population was spread out with 26.2 percent under the age of 18, 9.4 percent from 18 to 24 years, 28.4 percent 25-44 years, 22.1 percent from 45 to 64 years and 14.0 percent of 65 years or older. The average age (median) was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males to every 100 females age 18 and over, there vonab 94.4 males.

The median income for a household was $ 37,308, and the median income for a family was $ 46,362. Males have a median income of $ 31,509, women $ 22,047. The per capita income was $ 19,073. 6.0 percent of families and 8.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
