History

Already in 1645 the Jesuits settled here, but as a city founder is considered the captain-general of Maranhão André Vidal de Negreiro, who also managed Pará from 1655. He sent Feliciano Corrêa to set up on a hill of the Ilha do Atalaia ( Atalaiainsel ) some guns that should warn passing boats before the reefs to signal shots. This pilot mail function and the production of salt were the basis for the city. The latter is also reflected in the place names. Some families in 1656 have been summarized here in a small town.

Until the separation of Maranhão and Pará 1774 Salinas was part of Kapitänats ( Capitanía ) of Caeté.

On December 30, 1937, the City of Salinas in Salinópolis name was changed.
