Salish Sea

Salish Sea since 2009, the official name for the maritime area between Vancouver Iceland and the U.S. state of Washington. It is the Juan de Fuca Strait, however, remain the Strait of Georgia and Puget Sound, whose name in use.

In the United States the name is already longer in official documents and maps works in use in Canada since the end of 2009. Besides the regional associations of the Coastal Salish Indian groups living in the region, the marine biologist Bert Webber was the driving force for the introduction this overarching name.

In August 2009, the BC Geographical Names Office agreed to a recommendation to the Geographical Names Board of Canada. The name was endorsed by the Washington State Board on Geographic Names end of October 2009. He was followed by the United States Board on Geographic Names on November 12, 2009.
