Sally (Musical)

Sally is a musical comedy that produced Florenz Ziegfeld for the star of his revue Ziegfeld Follies of 1918, Marilyn Miller. He instructed Jerome Kern for the composition of music and Guy Bolton for writing a book. As model for an unrealized Princess Theatre show from Bolton and PG Wodehouse. The song lyrics are essentially by Clifford Grey. In addition, there were two songs from a failed musical use, the core had written with Buddy DeSylva, including the hit of the show, Look for the Silver Lining. An additional ballet number was composed by Victor Herbert.

The premiere took place on December 21, 1920 at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York. The success was extraordinary; the piece reached 585 performances, until then longest term of a Broadway show. In London's West End, the musical on September 10, 1921 in Winter Garden Theatre ( in its place now stands the New London Theatre ) premiered.

Action

The homeless, but pretty orphan Sally gets through the care of the rich widow Mrs. Ten Broek a position as Geschirrspülerin at the Alley Inn nightclub in Greenwich Village. There, she becomes friends with the waiter Connie, who is the exiled Grand Duke of Czechogovinia. The Long Iceland millionaire Richard Farquar has to hold the intention in honor of the Grand Duke a ball.

As Farquars son Blair visited the club, he falls in love with Sally. Connie, who knows something about dance, becomes aware of Sally's talent and arranged her an appearance at the Alley Inn. Most of the patrons of the theater agent Otis Hooper is with his fiancée Rosie Rafferty. He would like to get married, but has money worries - moreover his prima ballerina Madame Nookerova cancels her appearance for Farquars ball. Otis gets the idea that Sally could impersonate the Nookerova.

While Connie told on the ball evening Mrs. Ten Broek of his lost homeland, impressed with Sally's dance number to society. She gets a commitment in the Ziegfeld Follies and eventually their star. Otis is financially rehabilitated by this circumstance. For the finale marries Connie Ten, Otis Rosie and Sally Blair.

Filming

The film version with slightly altered plot and modified score was created in 1929 for the First National Pictures. In Germany the film was titled Cecily; the main role again played Marilyn Miller.
