Saloninus

Publius Licinius Cornelius Saloninus Valerian (c. 242, † 260 in Cologne) was a Roman Emperor in the year 260.

Life

Saloninus was born around the year 242. His father was the future emperor Gallienus, who himself came from a respected family, his mother Cornelia Salonina. After the death of his older brother Valerian Caesar in 258 Gallienus appointed him Caesar ( Under Emperor ). Saloninus then was sent to protect the Rhine frontier to Gaul. During this time resided in Colonia Claudia Ara Saloninus Agrippinensium, now Cologne. At his side stood a consultant whose name has been handed down with Silvanus and Albanus.

In the late summer of 260 to Saloninus and Silvanus / Albanus had to deal with the usurper Postumus, who had probably requires a larger share spoils after a victory over the Germanic tribes. Postumus then moved in front of Cologne, and besieged the city. Saloninus has been proclaimed Augustus, but finally delivered with Silvanus of Postumus and executed shortly afterwards. Postumus even built then the so-called Gallic Empire special, which lasted until 274. Gallienus, who was attached to the Danube frontier could not intervene (see Reich crisis of the 3rd century ).
