Geography
Location and landscape
The expansion of an area 14,163 km ², comprising the department of Artigas bordered to the north, on the east by Rivera and Tacuarembó to the south and west Paysandú on the Río Uruguay to Argentina. The area of the department is apart from a few small hills flat. The most important river in the department next to the Río Uruguay is the Rio Grande Arapey that crosses the entire department. Another running on its territory river is the Arroyo Grande Itapebí. West of the city Salto is the major hydroelectric power plant Salto Grande, where the Uruguay River is dammed to Embalse Salto Grande.
Settlement structure
More than three quarters of the population live in the capital of the department of Salto, with 104 028 inhabitants (as of 2011) is the second largest city of Uruguay. Other cities are located in the department of Constitución, Belén or Pueblo Lavalleja.
Mineral resources
In the northeastern area of the department can be found in the border region to Nachbardepartamento Artigas agate and amethyst deposits.
History
The creation of the department took place in June 1837 by law by the then President Manuel Oribe. From 1894 Salto had electric light. In 1905, the first time a car drove on roads somersaults.
