The El Salvador Colon (plural colones ) was from 1919 to 2001 the currency of El Salvador. It replaced the peso. The Colón was named after Cristóbal Colón, the Spanish name of the explorer Christopher Columbus. Colloquially, the term peso has retained.

The currency symbol is ₡ (Unicode: U 20 A1 colon sign ).

Since 2001, the Colón is replaced by the U.S. dollar in the fixed ratio of 8,75:1.
