Salvator Rosa

Salvator Rosa (born 21 or July 22, 1615 in Arenella (now in Naples ), † March 15, 1673 in Rome) was an Italian painter.

Life

After a very brief study of classical literature and music, Pink arrived 1631/32 in the house of the painter Jusepe de Ribera and became a student of Aniello Falcone. In the spring of 1633 Rosa undertook a small study tour of Apulia and Calabria, to " explore the nature and to capture on paper ." In Abruzzo, he was attacked by bandits and rumor has it, he is said to have even participated some time in their raids.

Later he returned to Naples, there was neither a job nor regular customer of his works. At age 19 he went to Rome in 1635 and lived there the first time also in very great poverty. In addition to many works to earn his livelihood, Rosa continued creating picture by picture and by the time there was also an interested audience.

In the next few years he could even afford a small studio in which then regularly met art lovers in friendly company. While Rosa but acquired by his amiable qualities friends and patrons, he went through his biting wit as many enemies. 1640 he has been through the mediation of Cardinal Giancarlo de Medici ( 1611-1663 ) was appointed as court painter to Florence, where he stayed until 1649.

1649 Pink returned to Rome and died there at the age of 57 years on March 15 in 1673.

Work

Rosas peculiar direction supports in particular in its scenic views. With enormous piled up masses of rock, heavy, jagged trunks, storm clouds or using highlights, he achieved a great overall effect, but remains in detail occasionally dramatized and unreal. Painted decoration are his scenes with bandits, soldiers, witches, etc.

Rosa was, along with Aniello Falcone, the founder of battle painting as a realitischen representation of the act of war and the most important model for Jacques Courtois. A big battle scene is in the Louvre, the conspiracy of Catiline is to be seen in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. These paintings adjoin Ribera's direction. Numerous pictures of Rosa are located in England, another in the Louvre, Dresden, Berlin, Vienna, Munich and St. Petersburg. Many of his pictures have been engraved. He etched 85 leaves that were treated with great freedom and security, but in good impressions are rare. Also exist of him, " satires " ( Amsterd. 1664, new outputs, Flor 1770. ), One of which, " Poetry ", by Fiorillo, a biography of the artist ( Götting. 1785 ) contains.
