Salvatore Accardo

Salvatore Accardo ( born September 26, 1941 in Turin ) is an Italian violinist and conductor.

Life

Accardo studied in the 1950s, first with Luigi d' Ambrosio at the Conservatory of Naples, where he won a first prize. He then continued his education at Yvonne Astruc at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. At the age of 13 he had his first public appearance with Paganini's Capricci. In 1955 he won the International Competition of Vercelli, in 1956 the International Competition of Geneva, in 1957 the Accademia Chigiana in Siena and in 1958 the first prize in the Paganini Competition in Genoa.

Then he started his solo career with extensive tours throughout Europe, North and South America. In 1968 he founded in Turin, the Orchestra da Camera Italiana; 1972 to 1977 he was concertmaster of the chamber orchestra I Musici 1973 to 1980 he taught the Accademia Musicale Chigiana. He called the Settimane Musicali Internazionali in Naples and the Cremona String Festival in life and in 1986 was one of the installer of the Walter Stauffer Academy. In 1987, he first worked as a conductor. In 1992 he founded the Accardo Quartet, in 1996 there was a new foundation of the Orchestra da Camera Italiana, which consists now of the best graduates of the Walter Stauffer Academy.

Repertoire

Accardos repertoire ranges from the Baroque to the present. High reputation he enjoys particularly for his interpretations of the works of Paganini and Bach and contemporary composers. Salvatore Sciarrino, Walter Piston, Donatoni, Astor Piazzolla and Iannis Xenakis dedicated works to him.

Accardo has two Stradivarius violins, the hard ex Francescatti ( 1727) and the Firebird ex Saint- Exupéry (1718 ).

Recordings

Accardos discography includes 50 recordings for Philips, DG, EMI, Sony Classical, FONE, Dynamic and Warner Fonit. He took Paganini's 24 Caprices for Solo Violin on (new recording 1999) and was the first who recorded all six of Paganini's violin concertos.

The violin solos in the film Kinski Paganini are played by Accardo.
