The Arctic char ( Salvelinus ) are a genus of salmonids.
Description
The genus char belongs to the family Salmonidae and has the typical for all salmonid adipose fin on. The body is streamlined. The genus is characterized by an extraordinary diversity among the different species, which is much larger than other salmon species of fish. Therefore, the systematics of the charr is not yet fully understood.
Habitat
The char can be found all over the northern hemisphere of the earth. They usually prefer cold, clear fresh water. Only a few species live katadrom ( migrating from salt water). Char are the freshwater fish that have advanced furthest in Arctic waters.
Arctic char, because of their natural insulation strains that differ in their color varieties from lake to lake slightly.
Economic importance as a food fish
Char are considered excellent food fish. Due to the high demands on the environmental conditions, the fishing economic Nach-/Aufzucht difficult. Therefore, only a relatively small number of char goes on sale.
