Orchestra

Berlin Philharmonic (1967 to 2012)

From 1967, the Berlin Philharmonic made under the musical direction of their respective chief conductor the artistic center of the festival. The main venue is the Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg, supplemented by events in the Great Hall of the Mozarteum Foundation as well as in the republic. The musical director of the opera and most orchestral concerts held the respective principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, where also a premier guest conductor was invited for one concert.

From 1994, supplemented the chamber music series founded by Claudio Abbado " counterpoints " the program were to experience in the Berlin Philharmonic members with renowned soloists and chamber musicians. The Salzburg Easter Festival was the only place where the Berlin Philharmonic to hear as an opera orchestra were ( apart from any co-productions).

What is striking is the high level of financial self- cover ratio of the festival: 92 per cent of the budget is introduced through contributions paid by the sponsors of the festival, ticket sales and sponsorship. Only eight percent come as a subsidy from the public purse. This high self- coverage is to be maintained only by a conveyor and subscription system with very high ticket prices, which brought the accusation of elitism the festival. Herbert von Karajan has developed a system whereby it take to get fixed capacities, you must first become a sponsor of the Easter Festival ( contribution: from 300, - EUR, Youth: 50, - EUR ) is and therefore entitled to a subscription from an opera performance and three concerts to buy. In the short term are not sold as individual subscriptions remaining tickets available ( without membership of the development association ). At very reasonable prices and in the sale, however, you can visit the chamber concerts (5, - to 50, - EUR ).

At the turn of 2009/2010 the Salzburg Easter Festival were faced with a financial scandal. Against several suspects determines the Salzburg prosecutor for fraud and breach of trust. The charges depend, inter alia, against the former CEO Michael Dewitte and the former technical director of the Salzburg Festival ( Summer Festival ), Klaus Kretschmer, who performed services for the Easter Festival. Both were dismissed in the wake of reported malversation.

As a result of the scandal, the Easter Festival was re-organized structures and staff in the spring of 2010. A new " Easter Festival in Salzburg GmbH " was founded, with the following partners: Foundation Herbert von Karajan Salzburg Easter Festival ( 25%), City of Salzburg ( 20%), State of Salzburg (20%), Salzburger Land Tourismus GmbH ( 20%), Association of sponsor of the Easter Festival in Salzburg (15 %).
