Salzstadelkaserne

The Salzstadel barracks, according to temporarily stationed there hunters also called Jägerkaserne, was an infantry barracks of the Bavarian Army in Munich. The barracks was originally conceived as a stopgap, but was more than 40 years.

Building and location

The Salzstadel barracks were housed in a 1780 -built granary near Munich Central Station, which stood to the north of the railway tracks, between today's Starnberger wing station and the Seidlstraße. Now, where it extends the Arnulf Street. It got its name from the lying in the immediate vicinity of the barracks Royal Salzstadel.

The building with earth and an upper floor was about 50 feet long. It has since been estimated at a capacity of 800 men, but corrected this estimate later to a maximum of 500 men. In line with its previous use, the building had neither kitchens nor abortions. Field kitchens and latrines were therefore, as well as two wells, situated next to the building on its own land city.

Use history

The Behelfskaserne had become necessary as after the riots in 1848, the military presence in Munich had been reinforced. 1849 the building was purchased by the garrison. As of 1851, the Salzstadel barracks was occupied by the 6th Rifle battalion, after its relocation from 1862 to 1867 with the 4th Rifle Battalion. After short-term occupancy by a battalion of the 2nd Infantry Regiment " Prince " in 1873 based companies of the 1st Infantry Regiment "King " the barracks. The makeshift conditions remained the same as at the time of the establishment of the barracks, protests of the city and the citizens were without effect. In 1889 was reported to the War Department, that the area would be needed for a post office. The soldiers of the 1st Infantry Regiment eventually moved in 1890 in the Campus Martius barracks after the railway pioneers stationed there were relocated to the new railway barracks. The granary was demolished after 40 years of military use makeshift, but there is not, as advertised, built a post office building, but still exists today Arnulf Street.
