Sam Gagner

Sam William Gagner ( born August 10, 1989 in London, Ontario ) is a Canadian professional ice hockey forward who plays for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League since 2007.

Career

Sam Gagner played from 2001 to 2005 in the junior league Greater Toronto Hockey League for the Toronto Maple Leafs, before moving to the Sioux City Musketeers in the U.S. Junior League United States Hockey League, where in his first season, the second best scorer of the team with 46 points was.

2005 Gagner has also been selected by the London Knights in the Entry Draft of the Canadian Junior Football League Ontario Hockey League in the fourth round. He had to be drafted as a clear favorite in the first round, but since he had already declared in advance prefer to compete for the University of Wisconsin in the college league, he was passed over by the teams.

He eventually decided to follow a different and changed in the summer of 2006 to the London Knights. There he formed with Patrick Kane and Syarhey Kaszizyn a forward line. Gagner reached the final of the Knights OHL playoffs and was during the season 's fifth best scorer in the league. His forward line scored on the season total of 394 points.

In early 2007 won Gagner with the Canadian U20 national team the gold medal at the Junior World Cup.

Due to his great talent, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 2007 by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round at position six. After convincing performances in the Super Series 2007 with a Canadian U20 selection and in training camp in September Oilers Gagner was awarded a contract with the Oilers and could be in the NHL squad prevail. He quickly emerged as a specialist in the shootout and was thus able to decide some games. Out of the game, however, he rarely scored in the first half of the season. In the second half of the season he was able to increase his points haul and he collected in February 2008, within twelve games 13 points scorer, which is why he was named NHL Rookie of the Month. He eventually finished the season with 13 goals from 36 and thus assists and finished fifth in the scorers list of the rookies. In the following three seasons, he could not come close to this value by 41 twice and 42 once scorer points each scarce. And the 2011/12 season he did not complete on the level of performance of his rookie year. Nevertheless, he managed 2 February 2012 set a franchise record for the Edmonton Oilers of Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey. When 8:4 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, the striker scored four goals and prepared the remaining four before. A game with at least eight points scorer was in NHL history to date only twelve players succeeded last Mario Lemieux on 31 December 1989. Fact that a player has participated in all eight matches of his team, had previously succeeded only once in the league history.

Family

Sam Gagners father is Dave Gagner, who in the NHL was 15 years active and scored 318 goals and 401 assists in 946 games. In 1991, he was with the Minnesota North Stars in the final of the Stanley Cup, but failed to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
