Sam McVey

The big hitting colored Californians 1902 professional boxer and boxed at the very beginning of his career, three times against Jack Johnson. Johnson won all the fights over 20 rounds, one by knockout in the 20th round, two on points against the then only 20 -year-old McVey, probably because of his experience. When Johnson later heavyweight champion was, he accepted only white challengers.

His most famous fight was a non-title fight against another Black, Joe Jeannette, Johnson could not challenge for the title because of his skin color. On April 7, 1909, he met in Paris on his opponent and hit him not less than 27 times to the ground, he was struck eleven times to the ground. Finally, in the 50th round of his eyes were so swollen that the fight was canceled.

Sam McVey also appeared several times against Sam Langford and Harry Wills and won the heavyweight title Colored. He died penniless of pneumonia, Jack Johnson paid for his funeral.

1999 was McVey induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
