Stages of samadhi

There are two types of Samadhi distinguished: the conscious samadhi is called Samprajnata, the superconscious Asamprajnata. When conscious Samadhi, also referred to as savikalpa Samadhi, the duality between betrachtendem mind and the higher self (Brahman, Purusha ) remains. In this type of samadhi takes the spiritual process, and especially the vibrations of the mental consciousness ( citta - vritti ), the form of Brahman. So is the mental vibration in Brahman come to rest, but even to remain always aware of her. When superconscious samadhi, also known as nirvikalpa samadhi, the spiritual consciousness will combine such with the Supreme Self ( Paramatma ) that the distinction between the knower, knowledge and the known evaporate, disappear like ripples in the water or how foam dissolves in the sea. This samadhi differs from the first in that consciousness does not return to normal mental self-awareness. The unity of consciousness with the inner enlightenment awareness of Paramatma Purusha remains exist. Therefore, this applies only Samadhi as true enlightenment.

The spiritual teacher Paramahansa Yogananda, however, differs in its interpretation of the Bhagavad Gita, three stages of Samadhi: The first stage, Jada Samadhi, was an unconscious kataleptisches stage, spiritually useless because it only temporarily canceling the awareness and activity of the ego. Jada samadhi, or trance unconscious, is by methods of physical control by keeping the mind empty or created by pressing on certain glands. This, however, will neither wisdom nor gained karma destroyed. In the state of Samadhi, however savikalpa attention and vitality are completely withdrawn from the senses, and identified themselves aware with the always joyful spirit. In this state, the soul is freed from the ego - consciousness and the mind becomes aware in which all creation rises. The body is in a trance the same condition, but the consciousness fully receptive to the blissful experience inside. Finally, in the forge most advanced state, nirvikalpa samadhi, the soul recognize the spirit as one. Self-consciousness, the soul consciousness and the spirit of the ocean are all recognized as together existing. In Nirvikalpa, the soul of the spirit inside and the outside world was aware at the same time. The divine man in this state should be able to pursue his substantive tasks and activities without losing its unity with God.

The Raja Yoga describes a graded path to enlightenment, which has its first peak in the Ishvara Samadhi. This Samadhi is regarded as a spiritual state of consciousness until then prepared through meditation body. The thus purified body 'm now under the control of the mind and see the Samadhi a deep rest and relaxation. On the Isvara - samadhi stage 8 of Raja Yoga, follow the savikalpa samadhi and nirvikalpa samadhi, the true enlightenment and union with the highest Atman, the Paramatma Purusha and the extinction of the ego - feeling. Experience of inner light of the students have already connected to the middle stages of Raja Yoga, only higher Samadhistufen be with experience of cosmic consciousness. More Samadhi steps to the master are not described in the open yoga systems.
