History

In order to promote tourism on the Samana peninsula, the end of 1999 the expansion of the existing airport Arroyo Barril within the contract with the company Aerodom Siglo XXI was adopted. However, in early 2001, the contract had to be changed because of the acquisition of the necessary land would have been too costly for the expansion of the existing airport and also the hilly terrain was considered unfavorable for flight operations. In place of the extension of the new building was approved. Construction of the airport was contractually fixed at the end of May 2001 and should bear the name " Aeropuerto Internacional de Samaná ."

In September 2003, members of Congress complained that the construction is still not completed and passed a resolution that the licensee should be encouraged to continue the construction work. Similarly, the Secretary of the public works should be asked to pay the outstanding payments for the land, as more than a hundred families had to leave the grounds and are still waiting for compensation. At that time was already the international airport " El Catey " and not spoken " Samana ".

In February 2005, President Leonel Fernandez promised a number of structures to promote, among others, the El Catey Airport, so the recovery of Samaná will be guaranteed as a tourist area.

In November 2006, the airport began operations and was officially opened on 7 February 2007. In honor of President Juan Bosch, he was named after him on this occasion.
