Samarian Spinel

The diamond Samarian spinel is part of the Iranian Crown Jewels and is the world's largest gem of its kind from spinel.

The gemstone weighs 100 grams and has 500 carats. The stone was together with a smaller spinel; robbed (270 carat 54 g ) by the Persian conqueror Nadir Shah in the 18th century during a looting in India. On the smaller spinel is a 350 year old Inscriptur, which refers to the former owner Jahangir, a Mughal rulers in India.
