Samatha

Shamatha (also: Samatha written; sanskrit, pali samatha, calm abiding '; Tib gzhi gnas ) is a Buddhist meditation technique. It can be translated as " quiet " or " peaceful abiding '. It is a meditation technique, which among other things the historical Buddha taught. Elements in their progressive development Jhana and Vipassana.

Samatha - bhavana aims at the development of concentration and hence on the stability of the mind. Various concentration levels are obtained as "Initial " or " access concentration " ( upacara samadhi) as well as lower forms such as the absorption of the Spirit ( apana samadhi) in the sinking levels of jhana ( pali ) / " Dhyana " ( Sanskrit) or the concentration from moment to moment ( khanika samadhi).
