Sambuca di Sicilia

Sambuca di Sicilia is a city in the province of Agrigento in the Italian region Sicily. By 1928, the place was called Sambuca Zabut and received within the Italianisation of place names Mussolini the current name Sambuca di Sicilia.

Location and data

Sambuca di Sicilia is 55 kilometers northwest of the provincial capital Agrigento. The town has 6016 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012), which are mainly engaged in agriculture.

Sambuca di Sicilia, together with the municipalities of Sciacca, Santa Margherita di Belice and Sciacca a common wine-growing region. Since 1995 there is a separate designation of origin of quality wines ( Denominazione di origine controllata ) for the vineyards around the lake Lago Arancio with the " DOC Sambuca di Sicilia ".

The neighboring municipalities are Bisacquino (PA ), Caltabellotta, Contessa Entellina (PA ), Giuliana (PA ), Sciacca, Santa Margherita di Belice and Sciacca.

History

Already in Arabic, there has been a settlement called Rahl Zabut. In 1185 it passed into the possession of the monastery of Monreale.

Attractions

In the old city today, the Islamic structure can be seen. It consists of winding streets and enclosed courtyards. In the 16th and 17th century, the structure was changed and it created important buildings.

The parish church of Maria SS Assunta was built in the Middle Ages, rebuilt in the 17th century. The facade is characterized by a large square tower. The Collegio Church dates from the 18th century.

In Via Marconi the Immaculate Conception Church from the 14th century is a portal to the origins of the Church. At the Piazza della Vittoria, the Carmine church is from the 16th century; the stucco work inside are from the 19th century. Inside there is also a marble statue of the Madonna by Antonello dell'Udienza Gaginis.

Next to the church stands the town hall. The Panitteri palace with elements from the late Renaissance is at the Piazza Navarro from the 16th century; here today is to visit the Ethno - Anthropological Museum.

The Municipal Theatre was rebuilt after the 1968 earthquake with the latest technology again. It was originally built in the style of theater in Palermo and Catania.

Outside the town is the Monte Adranone with an excavation of an ancient Greek town in the 6th century BC
