Samhain (Band)

Samhain was an American musical group that existed from 1983 to 1987. Founder and only continuous member was singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig. Samhain is considered as a musical link between Danzig's previous band, The Misfits, and the follow-up project Gdansk. The name is derived from the same Celtic festival of Samhain and is usually [s ˠ əu̯n ʲ ] pronounced, and sometimes [ sæmheɪn ].

History

Once there were differences between Glenn Danzig and the other members of the Misfits, they were dissolved. Samhain apply in addition to the Misfits as the founder of modern horror punk. The range of music from Samhain, however, was much wider -ranging. A sluggish, sometimes provided with choirs sound marks the musical style of the band, which is located between the 1980s Horror Punk, Gothic Rock and Heavy Metal.

After the dissolution of Misfits Danzig founded together with Eerie Von and Al Pike the band. In August 1984, appeared on the record label, Plan 9, the first Samhain album Initium (lat. = new beginning ) with a total of ten songs. In April 1985, the EP Unholy Passion was released with five songs. Was Initium also provided with strong influences Misfits, Samhain drifted now to Unholy Passion already in gothic rock areas. With November Coming Fire appeared in 1987, the last regular album of Samhain, appeared on amongst others, the Misfits classic Halloween in a new guise. This album was also Glenn Danzig's first album, which he produced himself. In early 1987, Samhain changed to American Recordings and it was renamed to Gdańsk. The gloomy, playing with occult symbols concept of Samhain, also reflected yet reflected in the first Danzig albums.

In the occupation today is out of Glenn Danzig himself no original Samhain longer a member. Although Samhain no longer exists basically since 1987, has been temporarily toured with some former musicians of the band again with the band Danzig on the occasion of the appearance of box set in 2000. Glenn Danzig himself referred to this, however, as a one time thing and preclude further appearances of Samhain.
