It lies on the east coast of the island and is the principal port city of Kefalonia links to the mainland and to Ithaca. History

The Sami place is first mentioned in the Odyssey, in the immediate vicinity of the city walls of a Mycenaean acropolis were discovered. In Sami lived in the late 1st or early 2nd century gnostic Epiphanes. With the founding of Kefalonia Tetrapolis the city was one of the four city-states. In the year 189 BC Sami defied the Roman siege and was sacked the following year. Afterwards, the city was transformed into a Roman port. In the 5th and 6th centuries, the city was the target of numerous pirate raids. Sami is sometimes incorrectly referred to in ancient sources as Samo or Samos, which has led to confusion with the island of Samos, especially since both have a good reputation in the wine production.

2001 in place of the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin was filmed.
