Samih Sawiris

Samih Sawiris Onsies ( Sawires, born January 28, 1957 in Cairo ) is an Egyptian businessman.

Life

Sawiris comes from a wealthy Coptic family. His father Onsies Sawiris founded in 1972, the company Orascom. He is the brother of Naguib Sawiris and has a younger brother. He attended the German Lutheran High School in Cairo. After studying industrial engineering at the Technical University of Berlin, he joined the family business Orascom, where he was responsible for the construction industry. Later he became head of Orascom Hotels and Development and had success with the construction of tourist centers, such as desert cities such as El Gouna ( a lagoon city). He also built in Cairo Haram City, a settlement of 50,000 flats for lower income residents of the city.

He is married to his second wife with an Ecuadorian and father of five children.

Tourism project in Andermatt

On 26 September 2009, the groundbreaking ceremony for the tourism project Andermatt Swiss Alps took place in Andermatt, which he had the company Andermatt Alpine Destination Company ( AADC ) founded with its headquarters in Altdorf in the Canton of Uri. In Andermatt he works closely with Bernhard Russi, a former Swiss alpine skier. On the former military site of the Swiss Army with an area of 1.46 square kilometers Sawiris plans to create a tourist center with several hotels, holiday homes and apartments, an 18- hole golf course, shops and a sports and leisure center with ice rink and indoor pool. The terrain in Andermatt was a part of the Swiss defense strategy in the Second World War, called Swiss Reduit.

With the establishment of Orascom Development Holding Sawiris has also moved the headquarters of its previous corporate group in Switzerland. His family was confiscated twice by the Egyptian state. The assets of the Sawiris family, which is estimated at $ 20 billion, accounts for 40 % of the market capitalization of the Egyptian stock market in Cairo.

Honors

  • Entrepreneur of the Year ( Switzerland ), 2009. Awarded by trade newspaper. On December 7, 2013 Samih Sawiris became the winners of the Arosa Humor shovel, 2013, a jury prize of the Arosa Humour Festival, chosen.
