Sampierdarena, formerly of San Pier d' Arena is a formerly independent town near Genoa, Liguria. San Pier now part of the municipality of Genoa and is home to 67 741 inhabitants (as of 2000).
Geography
San Pier d' Arena is located at the mouth of Polcevera the Ligurian Sea.
History
The name of the village of San Pier d' Arena is about Saint Peter from the beach and to go back to the legend that here for the first time Saint Peter Roman floor entered, to act as the first pope of the Christian community. In 1881, San Pier d' Arena had 19,501 inhabitants.
Attractions
San Pier d' Arena has an ancient parish church with the tombs of the Doria, several palaces and villas ( including the Villa Imperiale, now SCASSI, from the 16th century) and the Palazzo Spinola.
Culture
From the former club of the town SG Sampierdarenese was a merger with Genoese Football Club today known Serie A club Sampdoria.
