Samtredia

Samtredia (Georgian სამტრედია ) is a city in the Imereti region of Georgia. It is located 65 kilometers inland from the Black Sea port of Poti and 40 km west of Kutaisi on the highway S 1 in the Colchis lowland. The city has 30 008 inhabitants (2009 ).

Samtredia arose in 1874 around a railway junction in the western Georgia and soon developed into an industrial center. In the Georgian Civil War the city was occupied by supporters of Zviad Gamsakhurdia former President in 1993. In attacks of government forces under Eduard Shevardnadze 's economic infrastructure has been largely destroyed.

Largest Employers today are an ice cream factory, a cement plant and an asphalt company. The Georgian Railway maintains a large branch for freight and passenger traffic. Smaller companies are focused on the manufacture of clothing and household goods. The city has a theater, eleven public schools, two private schools and a college for agriculture.

26 km southeast of the city Wani lies with archaeological remains dating from the 1st millennium BC
