Samuel Berger (boxer)

Samuel Berger ( born December 25, 1884 in Chicago, Illinois, † February 23, 1925 in San Francisco, California ) was an American boxer.

Berger, an American of Jewish origin took, for the United States at the Olympic Games 1904 in St. Louis (Missouri, USA) and won the first gold medal in the heavyweight division. His professional career was brief and unspectacular. The only major combat ended in the year 1906 against the light heavyweight "Philadelphia" Jack O'Brien in a draw in the sixth round. Later Berger owned a textile business in San Francisco and was a manager of James J. Jeffries. He was inducted into the " International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame".
