Samuel David Luzzatto

Samuel David Luzzatto, also known by its acronym SchaDal known ( born August 22, 1800 Trieste, † September 30, 1865 in Padua ) was an Italian- Jewish scholar, poet and enlightener.

Although born to a Jewish turner, the gifted Luzzatto was taken early on in the Talmud school of his native town and received instruction in the classic Talmudic learning, and the education of his time. He received in 1810 German and French lessons from Mayer Randegger. However, probably for financial reasons he had to leave school in 1813 and continued his studies on Biblical exegesis and the Hebrew language as an autodidact. Through his translations became his poetic talent as scientific about Trieste also known, in 1821 he received the contract for the translation of the Ashkenazic prayer book into Italian. During the following years he worked as a private tutor.

1829 " Collegio Rabbinico Italiano " was founded in Padua, one of the first rabbinical seminaries. Luzzatto was appointed as a lecturer in theology and biblical studies, Hebrew grammar, and Jewish history. In this capacity he worked until his death. Through his education and his work before he was ready for the task in the years in Padua. He dealt in detail with the Hebrew language, Aramaic and Jewish literature. For this he gathered together with colleagues in Europe, ancient manuscripts, which led to the rediscovery of medieval Jewish poetry. He published the first poems of Judah ha -Levi, of which 1864 a selection appeared in Prague ( " sofa "). His work as a translator and lecturer impacted as a justification of Hebrew as a scientific language, which were indeed evolved several times in the following years, but gives him an important person of Judaism in Italy importance to the present day.

His autobiography first appeared in Hebrew as serialized in the journal Ha - Maggid 1858-1862, in 1882 there appeared a German edition.

Samuel David Luzzatto came from the Luzzatto family, which produced several scholars.
