Samuel Gottlieb Vogel

Samuel Gottlieb Vogel ( born March 14, 1750 in Erfurt, † January 19, 1837 in Rostock ) was a German physician. He is considered the father of the German seaside resort.

Life

Vogel began at the age of 14 years, his medical studies in Göttingen, in 1771 a doctorate and habilitation in 1776. He was a member of the Student Order ZN. He first practiced medicine in Göttingen, later in Ratzeburg as Landphysicus for the Principality of Ratzeburg (from 1780) and from 1783 for the Duchy of Lauenburg. He published several medical books.

In 1789 he was appointed professor of the medical faculty of the University of Rostock. In 1793 he persuaded the Duke of Mecklenburg Friedrich Franz I of Mecklenburg -Schwerin by the healing power of a seaside resort, after which the seaside resort of Heiligendamm was founded.

Bird carried the title of Mecklenburg secret court counselor; In 1834 he was elevated to the Bavarian nobility. Already in 1800 he has been accepted into the Masonic Temple of Truth in Rostock; at times he was the master of the chair.
