Samuel H. Shapiro

Samuel Harvey Shapiro ( born April 25, 1907 in Estonia, † March 16, 1987 in Kankakee, Illinois ) was an American politician and from 1968 to 1969 the 34th Governor of Illinois.

Early years

Born in Estonia under the name Israel Shapiro boy wandered very early to America. There he studied at the University of Illinois law. After passing the examination and his admission to the bar he practiced in Kankatee in Illinois. Soon after, he was District Attorney for Kankakee County.

Political rise

As a member of the Democratic Party, he was born in 1960 and 1964 respectively elected Lieutenant Governor of Illinois. Following the resignation of Governor Otto Kerner Shapiro was May 21, 1968, new Governor of Illinois. His task was to end the current until the January 1969 term of office of his predecessor. He stood for re-election in 1968, but was defeated by his Republican challenger Richard Ogilvie.

Further CV

After his election defeat and the end of his tenure, Shapiro moved back into his private life and was re- worked as a lawyer. He died in 1987.
