Samuel Jones (composer)

Samuel Jones ( born June 2, 1935 in Inverness / Mississippi) is an American composer, conductor and music educator.

Life

Jones was at the Eastman School of Music composition student of Howard Hanson, Bernard Rogers and Wayne Barlow and studied conducting with Richard Lert and William Steinberg. After conducting several smaller orchestra, he became conductor of the Rochester Symphony Orchestra. As a guest conductor he has appeared, among others with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Prague Symphony Orchestra and the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra on.

He founded in Michigan the Alma Symphony Orchestra of Alma College and Delta College Summer Festival of Music. In 1974 he founded the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. He launched it six years as dean and taught there until his retirement in 1997 as professor of composition and conducting. He also gave master classes for conductors and was 1987-88 President of the Conductors Guild.

Jones has composed three symphonies and other orchestral works, an opera, an oratorio, chamber music and solo works.
