Samuel Landauer

Samuel Landau ( born February 22, 1846 in Hürben, Bavaria, † February 18, 1937 in Augsburg ) was a German orientalist and librarian of the Jewish faith.

Landauer spent three years at the Yeshiva of Eisenstadt, Hungary, and then from 1863 to 1867 he was the matriculation examination at the Mainz Rabanus Maurus Gymnasium. He then studied at the University of Munich history, philosophy, classical philology, and especially Oriental languages ​​. There it is in 1872 his doctorate with a dissertation on the Arabist psychology of Ibn Sina. Presumably, he has continued his studies as at the universities of Leipzig, suffering and Strasbourg ( here at Theodor Nöldeke ). 1875 was the habilitation of Oriental Languages ​​at the University of Strasbourg and the appointment as Assistant Professor since 1875, he worked at the University Library of Strasbourg, in 1884 where he became a librarian, in 1894 he was appointed Honorary Professor of Oriental Languages ​​. He was expelled in late 1918 and moved to Augsburg. There he prepared on behalf of the Academy for the Science of Judaism to an output of the Targum ( Aramaic translation ) of the later prophets, which appeared in 1931. His grave is located in the Jewish Cemetery in Augsburg.

Landauer created essentially editions of Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic and Persian texts and published them. For the Commentaria in Aristotelem graeca he was entrusted with the publication of a Hebrew version of the commentary of Themistius to the writing of Aristotle On the Heavens.
