Samuel M. Stephenson

Samuel Merritt Stephenson ( born December 23, 1831 in Hartland, New Brunswick, † July 31, 1907 in Menominee, Michigan ) was an American politician of Canadian origin. Between 1889 and 1897 he represented the state of Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Samuel Stephenson was the younger brother of Isaac Stephenson (1829-1918), who sat for the State of Wisconsin in both houses of Congress. Even in his youth, he came with his parents to the United States, where the family first settled in Maine. In 1846 they moved to the Delta County in Michigan. There Stephenson worked in the timber industry. Since 1858 he lived in Menominee, where he was also on the property market, in trade and in agriculture has been working alongside the timber business. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party. For several years he served as a district administrator in Menominee County. From 1877 to 1878 he was a deputy in the House of Representatives from Michigan; 1879-1886 he was one of several times in the State Senate. In the years 1884 and 1888 Stephenson was a delegate to the Republican National Conventions relevant.

In the congressional elections of 1888 he was in the eleventh electoral district of Michigan in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Henry W. Seymour on March 4, 1889. After three re- elections, he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1897 four legislative sessions. Since 1893, he represented the then newly created there twelfth district of his state. After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives Samuel Stephenson worked again in the timber industry. He died on July 31, 1907 in Menominee.
