Samuel McLean (congressman)

Samuel McLean ( born August 7, 1826 in Summit Hill, Carbon County, Pennsylvania, † July 16, 1877 in Burkeville, Virginia ) was an American politician. Between 1864 and 1867 he represented the Montana Territory in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Early years

Samuel McLean attended the public schools in Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania and Lafayette College in Easton, also in Pennsylvania. After a subsequent law degree, he was admitted to the bar in 1849. He then began to practice in his new profession in his home state. From 1855 to 1860 he was district attorney in Carbon County. Then he moved to the West, where in 1860 the Attorney General in the former Jefferson Territory, now the state of Colorado, has been a year.

Political career

McLean was a member of the Democratic Party. After the founding of the Montana Territory, he was sent as the first delegate of that area in the U.S. House of Representatives. There he represented between 6 January 1865 and 3 March 1867 his territory. Due to the fact that Montana was not yet a state of the United States, Samuel McLean had no vote in Congress. In 1866 he abandoned a bid again.

Samuel McLean later became president of his McLean Silver Mining Company. Then he moved to Virginia, where he managed a plantation near Burkesville. He is also passed in 1877.
