Samuel Meredith

Samuel Meredith (* 1741 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † February 10, 1817 in Wayne County, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician, who participated as a delegate from Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress.

As a teenager, was Samuel Meredith at the Doctor Allison's Academy, a private school in Philadelphia, trained. He then embarked on a career in the commercial sector. After the outbreak of the American Revolution in 1776, he joined the Continental Army and served during the Revolutionary War, first in the rank of Major. He commanded a battalion and was promoted on April 5, 1777 to brigadier general of the militia of Pennsylvania. In 1778 he retired from the military.

After he had listened to the colonial Parliament of Pennsylvania before the revolution, continued Meredith continued his political career now. From 1786 to 1788 he took his seat as a delegate to the Continental Congress true, whose meetings were held at that time exclusively in New York. On 1 August 1789 he took over the post of inspector ( surveyor ) at the port of Philadelphia. Finally, he was appointed by President George Washington as the successor to Michael Hillegas to the Treasurer of the United States. He was the first owner of this high position in the Ministry of Finance after the entry into force of the U.S. Constitution and she held from September 11 1789 until his resignation on December 1, 1801.

Meredith sat down then at his country estate " Belmont Manor " near the small town of Mount Pleasant in Wayne County to rest. He died there in February 1817 and has been in the family cemetery, which was located on his property, buried.
