Samuel of Speyer

Samuel ben Kalonymus he- Hasid ( " the Pious ", even the Holy One, the Prophet ) ( * after 1096 in Speyer ) was an important exegete of Torah and Midrash. He is called a bridge figure in the tradition of oral ethical- theological tradition of Kalonymiden to chaside ashkenaz of the 12th - 13th Century considered.

Life

The biographical tradition to Samuel ben Kalonymus is sparse. Narratives of the 15th - 16th Century report on magical abilities with which he should have protected Jews from oppressors.

Work and continuing influence

His work is with the exception of his contributions to the Sefer Ḥasidim (especially the first part is attributed to him) only in a few quotations. His son Judah ben Samuel led his work, especially his work on the Sefer Ḥasidim to continue. His son Abraham ben Samuel is considered to be significant authority on Halacha.
