Samuel Smith (New Hampshire)

Samuel Smith ( born November 11, 1765 in Peterborough, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, † April 25, 1842 ) was an American politician. Between 1813 and 1815 he represented the State of New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Samuel Smith was the younger brother of Jeremiah Smith (1759-1842), who was sitting 1791-1797 for New Hamsphire in Congress and was 1809-1810 Governor of that State. Smith was also the uncle of Robert Smith (1802-1867), who represented 1843-1849 twice the state of Illinois in Congress. Samuel Smith attended the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter. He was then engaged in trade. Between 1794 and 1811 he worked at various political meetings as a discussion leader.

Smith was a member of the Federalist Party. In the congressional elections of 1812, which were held all across the state, he was elected for the second parliamentary seat from New Hampshire in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. There he met on March 4, 1813 the successor of Samuel Dinsmoor of the Democratic- Republican Party. Since he resigned in 1814 to further candidacy, Smith could remain only one term in Congress until March 3, 1815. This time was determined by the events of British - American War.

After the end of his time in Congress, Smith began working again in the trade. Since 1828, he also dealt with the production of paper and cotton products. He died on 25 April 1842 in his native Peterborough.
