Samuel Stevens, Jr.

Samuel Stevens, Jr. ( * July 13, 1778 in Talbot County, Maryland, † February 7, 1860 ) was an American politician and 1822-1826 Governor of Maryland.

Early years and political rise

Samuel Stevens graduated from the Reverend John Bowie 's School. During the War of 1812 he was a captain in the militia of Maryland. Between 1807 and 1820, he was several times delegate in the House of Representatives from Maryland. Samuel Stevens was a member of the Democratic- Republican Party and was elected as its candidate in 1822 by the legislature of his state to the new governor.

Stevens stepped up his new post on 16 December 1822. After he was confirmed in his office each in the years 1823 and 1824, he could remain in office until January 2nd in 1826. During his reign the Jews in Maryland were given the right to vote. At that time, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company was founded and completed the first state road. After the expiration of his term of office was Stevens President of the Agricultural Association (Agricultural Society for the Eastern Shore ). He died in February 1860 at the age of 81 years. With his wife Eliza May he had nine children.
