Samuel von Cocceji

Samuel Freiherr von Cocceji (pronounced kok'tse: ji, born October 20, 1679 Heidelberg, † October 4, 1755 in Berlin) was known by the reform of the Prussian judiciary.

Life

Samuel Cocceji 1702 was professor at the European University Viadrina, 1723 Court of Appeal President, 1738-1739 and 1741-1746 Prussian Minister of Justice and Lord Chancellor since 1747. He was commissioned by Frederick II with the reorganization of the Prussian legal relationships in conquered Silesia and then reformed the legal system throughout Prussia.

His father Heinrich Cocceji (original name: Cook, later Cocceji of Cocq ) was a lawyer in Heidelberg ( successor of Samuel Pufendorf ), later professor in Utrecht and at the Viadrina, but Samuel was always more interested in the practical implementation.

He created a uniform judicial system, which was divided in three instances and ensured the independence of judges, by establishing a fixed uniform salaries that were previously heavily dependent on the nobility and the lawyer. He led a 1748 top binding jurisdiction, the Tribunal a, which all other courts in the country were subordinate, which earned him a strong resistance of the stands. Family

Samuel Cocceji married Johanna Charlotte of Beschefer, daughter of the Prussian Lieutenant General Jacob of Bechefer. They had two daughters and three sons, of whom Carl Friedrich Ernst (1725-1780), general in the service of the last king of Poland, Stanisław August, was the best known. Johann Heinrich Friedrich became the Prussian royal colonel and adjutant-general. Karl Ludwig ( † July 12, 1808 ) was President of the Government of Upper Glogau. The daughter Charlotte Amalie Henriette married Baron Mathieu II of Vernezobre - Laurieux (1721-1782) and Sophia Charlotte Susanna General Dubislav Friedrich von Platen.

The Barons of Cocceji are extinguished with the death of the youngest son of Samuel, Carl Ludwig in the male line. He died childless on 12 July 1808. Carl Ludwig was for a time with the famous and infamous ballet dancer La Barberina (Barbara Campanini ) married.

Honors

After Samuel Cocceji the hinterpommersche place Coccejendorf was named ( a settlement of Palatine citizens of the year 1749 on the former base of Schwenzenhagen, today Polish Radosław ). Furthermore him the Black Eagle Order was founded by King Frederick II of Prussia on March 7, 1747 awarded
