Samuel Wilberforce

Samuel Wilberforce ( born September 7, 1805 in Clapham, London, † July 19, 1873 in Abinger near Dorking ) was an Anglican bishop.

Life and work

Samuel Wilberforce was the third son of William Wilberforce and his wife Barbara ( 1777-1847 ). He studied from 1823 at Oriel College, Oxford. There Wilberforce received his degree as Bachelor of Arts in 1826 and in 1829 as Master of Arts. In 1828 he was ordained and married Emily, daughter of Reverend John Sargent ( 1780-1855 ). From 1830 to 1840 he was rector in Bright Stone on the Isle of Wight. 1839 Wilberforce archdeacon of Surrey, and in 1841 chaplain to Prince Albert. From 1840 to 1843 he served as rector of Alverstoke ( Hampshire).

1845 Wilberforce Dean of Westminster and a doctorate in Oxford for divinitatis Doctor ( Doctor of Divinity ). In November 1845 he was appointed Bishop of Oxford. On December 18, 1845 took him to the Royal Society as a member.

On June 30, 1860, came at the annual meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science for the so-called " Huxley - Wilberforce debate" about Charles Darwin's writing The Origin of Species, in Wilberforce, a later wide rezipiertes war of words with the biologist Thomas Henry Huxley delivered.

The office as Bishop of Oxford from Wilberforce practiced until 1869. He was then Bishop of Winchester. Bishop Wilberforce died after he was thrown from his horse near Dorking. He is buried in the church cemetery in Lavington.
