Samur River

River valley

The Samur (Russian Самур ) is a river in the Caucasus region with 213 km length.

It rises in the western Dagestan and forms in its lower reaches the boundary between the Russian Republic and Azerbaijan, before emptying into the Caspian Sea. Since water from the Samur is taken for irrigation purposes, the river level has fallen sharply.

The region around the Samur is inhabited in both states of the Caucasus nation of Lezgins and therefore carries the name Lesgistan.
