Samurai Shodown (series)

Samurai Shodown ( Samurai Spirits in Japan) is the name of a fighting game series by SNK, originally released for the Neo - Geo machines and game console. The original series was held in 2D and had four successors; next several games were released in 3D graphics for the Hyper Neo Geo 64

Overview

The plot of the series is settled in Japan in the 18th century. The first four issues play in the years 1788 and 1789. Typical for this time characters, some of which have real role models but also fighters from other countries were (partly those that did not even exist at the time), as well as built monster. The actions of the games are very different, but all revolve around the same set of figures and a region in Japan.

Effect of the game

Samurai Shodown was beside Mortal Kombat the first beat ' em up, not sat on the classic combat system of the then dominant Street Fighter II. Instead, led SNK a new system with changes in the gameplay one in which mainly the arms and the "Rage Gauge" ( a bar that charges by inserted strokes and increases the combat power of that character as well as a particularly effective attack unlocks once) for variety and tactical depth ensured. Samurai Shodown is one of the games with the biggest animated 2D sprites.

Musically, the series is independently represents: The figures corresponding to the selected background soundtrack changes from rock that is used in American -oriented characters, over orchestral arrangements with Renaissance instruments. The pieces of some Japanese characters usually consist of very reduced Asian Music accompaniment of flutes and medieval stringed instruments. These are often accompanied by additional song.

Representation of violence

The game can be beaten ( in the Neo - Geo and Neo Geo CD versions ) to struggle completion by certain attacks of the enemy in half, whereupon its body is then removed under gloating victories sayings of the winner on a covered stretcher. The manufacturer SNK saw in the parts from two and three of them to use this feature again. Also in the Super Nintendo, Gameboy and Megadrive versions of the first album, it was not accepted. The Neo -Geo version of Samurai Shodown II used to display, depending on the selected language version, either red or green blood. If the game is run in English, this is green, in the Japanese version in red.
